Welcome to my journey on building a better self! I am excited to share my story with all of you and for you to be a part of this journey!
A bit of a back story:
I am currently a business student in Calgary. I was born and raised just outside of Vancouver, and to put myself through school I have worked in the restaurant industry for 9 and a half years. Being a server, a bartender, and a manager means a lot of time spent on my feet, for long periods of the day. The rest of my day of course, is spent hunched over a computer or a school desk.
It comes to no surprise that I have slowly started to develop a variety of back issues, hip pains, and shoulder tightness.
My fitness journey began a few years back when I still lived at home. I joined a local gym, and figured that it was time for me to get in shape. I, like many beginners, was lost and overwhelmed walking into the fitness center. Every day, I walked right to the treadmill or the indoor track and ran – it was the only thing I knew how to do.
Naturally, I got bored and fell out of routine. School and life got in the way. I moved to Calgary, and with the dramatic change in winter weather, my back was only getting worse. This past year I was working as a manager and a bartender, more than 50 hours a week, and I was in full time classes. I burnt myself out – I had no energy or motivation to do anything, I had no self-confidence, I wasn’t sleeping, and overall I just wasn’t happy with my life.
That’s when I knew that something had to change.
I picked up my feet one day and walked into the gym near my apartment. I knew I needed help when it came to working out, so I walked right up to the counter and said, “I’m looking for a membership, but I really need some guidance.”
This was the best decision I could have made at this point in my life. It has only been a month, but I am seeing a personal trainer and she is helping me realize why my body behaves and feels the way it does, and the process I can undergo (with her help) to correct it. We have realized that I have minor scoliosis, which explains the crookedness and tightness of my hips and legs, and the extra work that my body puts on certain muscles.
I am more than excited to continue on this journey, and I look forward to seeing and feeling the differences it will make in my life!
I know I’m not the only one struggling to find the motivation and the knowledge to build a better self. Come on this journey with me!
Not only am I working towards feeling more mobile, healthy, and confident, but I am also hoping to help other people in their journeys as well
